Local engineering council recognizes realignment/widening project featuring storm water elements

RBF Consulting recently received an Engineering Project Achievement Award from the Orange County Engineering Council (OCEC) for the Culver Drive realignment and widening project in Irvine, Calif. RBF was recognized at the OCEC Annual Engineers Week Awards Banquet in February.

RBF provided the city of Irvine with a wide range of consulting services for this high-profile project, working closely with representatives from the city, Irvine residents, Orange County Transportation Authority, Caltrans, the University of California at Irvine and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). Multiple project alternatives were evaluated to comply with FHWA's reporting requirements under the National Environmental Protection Act. Construction of the preferred alternative was completed and opened to traffic in November 2007.

Subsequent to FHWA approval of the environmental document, RBF prepared construction documents for the project. The work program included many unique features, including design of a subterranean detention facility, storm water quality swale, glass and block wall sound barrier design and a meandering Class 1 bicycle trail.

The project had a strong community outreach component that resulted in positive community support and balanced traffic improvements that will provide long-lasting benefits.
