Middle Logan Creek runs through Randolph, Nebraska from west to east, placing much of the town in a federally designated floodplain. The area has been flooded 14 times in the past 100 years. The last major flood occurred in 2019.
The unpredictable nature of the flooding has caused a severe impact on the town. Residents are required to carry expensive flood insurance and permits for new constructions and renovations of existing buildings have been placed on hold because of the location.
To remove most of the town from the floodplain, the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Omaha District widened a 1.5 mile segment of Middle Logan Creek. The goal was to carry water from future 100-year floods through the city in the channel, thus eliminating flooding in Randolph.
After the channel was extended, the side slopes needed to be stabilized. The project called for a stabilization system that used High Performance Turf Reinforcement Mat (HPTRM) with earth anchors that can achieve a minimum allowable working load pullout resistance of 300 pounds and have a minimum service life of 75-years. The HPTRM was also required to have a 75-year minimum design life.
The ARMORMAX® system was selected because it meets these specifications, plus it is engineered to promote rapid root development and long-term vegetation. The system has been tested an approved by the USACE, and has been used to stabilize more than 100 miles of levees through the U.S.
The project was successful. Three months after ARMORMAX was installed, the channel was fully vegetated and shows no signs of erosion.
