Like many parts of North America, Edmonton, Canada, once again experienced above-average rainfall and flooding in the summer months. That created challenges for underground tank installations. Since the tanks being installed will manage storm water overflow, a timely installation was crucial.

In July and August, three ZCL | Xerxes retention tanks were installed below two levels of parking at a downtown performance center. The 10-foot-diameter manifolded tanks will collect rainwater from both the site’s original multipurpose arts center and a new extension.

Each tank has a 40,000-gallon capacity. In the third of the manifolded tanks, duplex sump pumps are sized to pump up to 300 gallons of water a minute into a sampling manhole. That water will then flow into the city’s storm water system. An overflow 8-inch storm pipe placed above that tank will gravity-drain storm water directly into a sample manhole. ZCL | Xerxes tanks are available in diameters ranging from 4 to 12 feet and in individual tank capacities up to 50,000 gallons. The tanks can be manufactured and configured to handle any volume of storm water. Depending on the site footprint and project specifications, the required number of tanks can be delivered as one-unit tanks or as tank sections to be field-joined at the site.

Corrosion resistant inside and out, the fiberglass tanks are made of 100% premium resin with no fillers. The domed tanks are manufactured with integral, high-profile ribs for added structural strength and are designed for long-term service with little or no maintenance. Because fiberglass tanks are lightweight, they are easy to ship and handle, and require no heavy equipment to install. In urban locations such as this—and remote and hard-to-reach sites—this is particularly beneficial to installers. Backed by more than 40 years in the industry and more than 200,000 installations, ZCL | Xerxes tanks are designed to withstand H-25/HS-25 axle loads and are not limited by burial depth or water table. They are IAPMO/ANSI Z1002-listed tanks manufactured to the ANSI/AWWA D120 standard.
