NOAA announces staff cuts amid Trump administration's reductions

March 17, 2025
NOAA's decision to cut staff raises concerns about its ability to provide accurate weather forecasts and monitor natural disasters effectively.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced on March 12, 2025, that it would cut roughly 1,000 employees as part of President Trump’s reductions.

NOAA is known for its daily weather forecasts, but it also monitors and warns about hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and tsunamis. NOAA manages the country’s fisheries, runs marine sanctuaries, provides navigation information to ships and observes changes in the climate and oceans.

According to an Associated Press article, the cuts are being ordered without specific guidance from the Trump administration.

NOAA announced on March 7 that it had to temporarily suspend some weather balloon launches in Albany, New York, and Gray, Maine, due to lack of staffing.

The announcement of staff cuts came roughly one week before devastating storms swept across the U.S.
