The people of Sydney, NS, Canada, are now able to enjoy more of their downtown because remediation of the Tar Ponds and Coke Ovens is complete. The remediation was the largest contaminated site cleanup ever planned in Canada. The Tar Ponds and Coke Ovens are the result of more than 100 years of steel production in the area. The contamination has had an environmental impact on 274.1 acres of land.
Proco Products Inc. of Stockton, Calif., was part of the cleanup. Proco supplied 18, 900-mm ProFlex 710/NN rubber duckbill check valves. They were used as backflow preventers in the process to contain contaminants in cement on the project. The valves were provided with barnacle- and algae-resistant materials. The check valve aids in making this space safe and beautiful for the people of Cape Breton to enjoy for generations to come.
The duckbill valve is widely used as a backflow device whenever there is a concern of possible backflow up a stream channel. In this project, the effluent was to flow out to the sea, but the customer did not want infiltration of saltwater back into its work area. The duckbill check valves that were supplied offer low head cracking pressures and high back pressure capability, and they offer 35 to 50 years of service life.
