North Carolina Hospital Addresses Erosion Control Violations
Archer Western Contractors has implemented erosion control strategies in response to three violations from the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) regarding construction on the Broughton Hospital in Morganton, N.C. DEQ found sediment buildup in a wetland, tributary and pond near the construction site and demanded a response from the contractor.
Archer Western Contractors’ remediation plan involved removing construction-related sediments from the stream and wetland by hand labor, relocating the sediment to at least 30 ft from the area and installing soil stabilization measures. The sediment was stabilized with seed, straw or silt fencing and a wetland seed soil mix was spread over the area.
“Sediment attributable to construction activities consisted of a very fine-grained orange clay material, where pre-existing and naturally transported sediments consist of courser grey and tan-colored sand,” Archer Western Contractors’ remediation plan stated.
To prevent further disruption, a silt fence was installed around the wetland area and a diversion ditch with erosion control matting was installed along the ridge line to an existing inlet. Archer Western Contractors have notified DEQ that erosion control measures have been implemented and await site review, according to Morganton news source The News Herald.
