On Sept. 3, heavy rainfall resulted in flash floods and road closures in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. The National Weather Service declared flood warnings for northern Cook County and eastern DuPage County, while a flood advisory was in effect for southeast Cook County and northwest Lake County. Additionally, flood warnings were in effect for parts of the Fox and Des Plaines rivers, as reported by the Chicago Tribune.
Notably, flooding occurred along Interstate 190, blocking access to O’Hare International Airport on the evening of Labor Day, Sept. 3. The extreme weather also caused a tornado to touchdown near Loves Park, Ill., and some tree damage was reported.
Lake County and Cook County felt the brunt of the storm, where severe storm downed trees and blocked roadways. In Lake County, a wall partially collapsed on a railroad underpass near Libertyville, Ill., according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. Flooded roadways trapped several cars in high floodwaters near Highland Park, Ill., as reported by CBS Local. Some drivers were forced to abandon their vehicles in the floodwaters.
With more rain in the forecast for Chicagoland over the next few days, officials will continue to monitor the Fox and Des Plaines Rivers.
