New outfall construction begins in Myrtle Beach

Aug. 21, 2024
A new stormwater outfall has started construction in Myrtle Beach that will replace 11 stormwater pipes on the beach.

Construction has begun on a new stormwater outfall in Myrtle Beach. The construction was scheduled to begin August 19, 2024, and is located at the 24th Avenue North.

Ocean outfalls and stormwater pipes filter sediment, improve water quality and help catch trash before runoff reaches the ocean. Once built, the ocean outfall will replace 11 stormwater pipes currently on the beach.

The construction crews will first begin building a trestle, which looks like the scaffolding to a boardwalk. The trestle will extend 1,500 feet out to sea from the beach. A crane will use the trestle to excavate the ocean floor and install the outfall’s large, concrete pipe.

Construction on the beach is expected to begin September 10, 2024, with the first trestle piles on scheduled to be installed on October 1, 2024.

An emergency beach access will be operational by January 1, 2024, at the construction site for first responders.

Construction activity on the site will occur between 7:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday. No Sunday work is planned unless absolutely necessary.

This will be Myrtle Beach’s fifth outfall. The other four ocean outfalls are located at 25th Avenue South, Fourth Avenue North, 14th Avenue North and 53rd Avenue North.

The entire project is scheduled to be completed by early 2026.
