Illinois village announces $2 million for stormwater detention

La Grange Village, Illinois, announced $2 million for stormwater detention.

Senator Mike Porfirio announced on June 24, 2024, that the state of Illinois has identified $2 million in funding for a proposed project for underground stormwater detention at Lyons Township High School—North Campus, in La Grange, Illinois.

The project has been identified as one of the most impactful projects for addressing stormwater in the Village’s North Basin, which is the area north of 47th Street.

Senator Porfirio and Senate Majority Leader Kimberly Lightford worked together to secure the funding to assist in the project’s construction.

Last summer, the high school reached out to the village to initiate a conversation on whether increased underground detention could be a part of the high school’s future plans for installing turfgrass on its West Field.

Village staff and consultant engineers reviewed the project and found that the construction of expanded underground detention would result in significant improvements to flooding conditions in this region.

The proposed $8.9 million project includes the construction of 10-acre feet of underground stormwater detention. The village is currently pursuing additional sources of funding to assemble the required financing for the project.
