Milwaukee District Reports Sewer Overflows

The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) reported the following information to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources regarding two overflows that occurred from the district’s sewer system on April 3, 2006. The volumes reported do not reflect any overflows that may have occurred from the sewer systems of the 28 communities served by MMSD.
Heavy rain blanketed the district on April 2 and 3 with intense cells dropping up to three inches or more in some areas.
A combination of leaky sewers and capacity limitations in two isolated areas made it necessary to have overflows to avoid the risk of sewage backing up into the basements of homes.
A separate sewer overflow occurred at Lake Drive and Ravine Lane from 4:50 a.m. to 9:50 a.m. with an estimated volume of 22,000 gallons.
From 4:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., a separate sewer overflow occurred at Range Line Road and the Milwaukee River. The estimated volume is 324,000 gallons.
The public can track storms and find out if overflows are occurring from MMSD’s sewer system by logging on to the district’s website: www.mmsd.com. Click on the “Storm Update” icon.
