Turner Construction Co.has substantially completed New York City's largest green roof for the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) atop the 2.2-million-sq-ft Morgan Mail Processing Facility.
The scope of work included the installation of plants and grasses and 14 wood benches made from lumber certified sustainable by the Forest Stewardship Council. The roof will reduce storm water runoff and save the USPS $30,000 each year on heating and cooling costs.
The 2.5-acre green roof is part of the USPS's "greener" facilities strategy and will help the agency achieve its goal of reducing energy use by 30 percent by 2015. To further support the strategy, Turner replaced more than 2,000 windows and installed more than 50 air handler units. Turner also managed the interior fit-outs on the seventh and eighth floors in the facility to improve the energy efficiency of the Morgan Mail Processing Facility.
