APWA Chicago Metro Suburban Branch Hosts Award Luncheon

The Suburban Branch of the American Public Works Assn. (APWA) Chicago Metro Chapter recently hosted its annual Awards Luncheon at Medinah Banquets in Addison, Ill. With 80 people in attendance, the branch presented seven awards to teams and organizations that displayed excellence in different categories outlined by APWA.
The Project of the Year Award promotes excellence in the management and administration of public works projects by recognizing the alliance between the managing agency, the consultant/architect/engineer and the contractor. The award went to four projects this year:
- Transportation less than $5 million: Busse Woods Pedestrian Overpass at Illinois Route 72 – Village of Elk Grove Village
- Transportation $25 to $72 million: 71st Street Grade Separation – Village of Bridgeview
- Environment Less than $5 million: Atrium Force Main Replacement – City of Elmhurst
- Environment $5 to $25 million: Techny Road – Pfingsten Road Stormwater Management Improvements – Village of Northbrook
The last three awards handed out during the luncheon recognized innovative initiatives that serve the public and protect the environment; outstanding contributions to promote sustainability in public works; and outstanding individual achievement through chapter activity:
- Management Innovation Award: Compostable Food Scrap Collection Program – Village of Oak Park
- Sustainability Practices Award: The Woodlands – Green Initiative Infrastructure Improvements Phase 1 – Village of Hinsdale
- Harry Swearingen (Robert C. Retondo) Award for Outstanding Chapter Achievement and Excellence in Chapter Services: Michael J. Reynolds – Village of Buffalo Grove
All seven award winners will move on to compete in the same categories for the APWA Chicago Metro Chapter Awards.
