In January, the editorial staff of Water & Wastes Digest (WWD), Storm Water Solutions and Water Quality Products had the pleasure of touring the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago’s (MWRDGC) Mainstream Pumping Station in Hodgkins, Ill. The station is a key component of the district’s Tunnel and Reservoir Project, better known as the Deep Tunnel system, which alleviates flooding and protects Lake Michigan from backflows and sewer overflow pollution from an area of 375 sq miles.
MWRDGC coordinated the tour, which began with an overview of the Deep Tunnel through maps and models demonstrating TARP’s history and long-term goals. Chief Operating Engineer Hank Marks and other MWRDGC staffers led hard hat-clad editors Neda Simeonova, Caitlin Cunningham, Kate Cline and me through the dewatering station, trash removal building, pump room (350 ft below ground!), McCook Reservoir construction site and more.
