Today we celebrate World Water Day, held annually on March 22 since its inception in 1993, when the United Nations General Assembly dedicated the day to a focus on water issues. Now in its 18th year, World Water Day highlights the importance of freshwater and advocates sustainably managing freshwater resources.
Thirty-eight percent of the world’s population experience water scarcity, according to the Fraunhofer Institute. The latest UN statistics state that 60% of the world’s cities will face water shortages by 2025; at the same time, many cities across the globe experience the devastation of flooding.
Our nation’s and world’s infrastructure must sustainably meet the dual needs of freshwater supply and flood management. By making this a priority, we can even out the playing field and ensure that everyone has access to a resource that no one can live without while minimizing the destruction caused by lack of flood control.
