Water and energy are indelibly linked. Creating enegery requires using water, especially in hydroelectric, nuclear and thermal energy sources. At the same time, about 8% of the global energy generation is used for pumping, treating and transporting water to consumers.
With this in mind, the theme of 2014's World Water Day (March 22) is Water and Energy, in an effort by the UN to bring attention to the water-energy nexus.
The UN states that it plans to address inequalities, "especially for the 'bottom billion' who live in slums and impoverished rural areas and survive without access to safe drinking water, adequate sanitation, sufficient food and energy services ... [and] facilitate the development of policies ... [that lead] the way to energy security and sustainable water use in a green economy."
