A new report recommends fresh approaches for stronger coordination between the water and electric power sectors to achieve a more sustainable, resilient and cost-effective freshwater system.
The Johnson Foundation report, “Building Resilient Utilities: How Water and Electric Utilities Can Co-Create Their Futures,” indicates that technological innovations and enhanced energy efficiency offer opportunities for utilities to significantly reduce or eliminate their net energy use while also achieving greater nutrient recovery and more efficient use of water.
Some of the report’s recommendations for the water and power sectors include stimulating cross-sector communication; partnering on education and outreach; engaging in collaborative planning; reducing disincentives and risks; and identifying regulatory constraints and opportunities.
