This week, we celebrate World Water Week, the annual focal point for global water issues and the world’s largest conference on water happening in Stockholm August 23 through August 28. In its jubilee year, the event is organized by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), and each year a new theme is chosen.
This year’s theme is the role of water for development. Water is essential not just to life, but also to development, industry and energy.
According to SIWI, “Water is the foundation for all aspects of human and societal progress. While we need to ensure access to safe water for those 1.8 billion people who do not have it today, we must also manage the global rise in demand for water from growing economies by increasing water productivity, and find incentives for using it more effectively. Water security is both a condition for, and a result of, sustainable development.”
