The role of any sediment containment system (SCS) is to allow for the settlement of soil particles that are suspended in runoff waters. While SCSs are the only effective method for removing sediment from runoff waters, in order to be effective in protecting the environment, they must be able to capture design size particles during flood flow conditions.
Working through Fifield’s best-selling Designing and Reviewing Effective Sediment and Erosion Control Plans (3rded.), this third module of our Sediment and Erosion Control for Construction Sites Master Class Series presents a scientific and engineering assessment of parameters necessary to capture design size particles while flood flows are discharging from a containment system. Fifield and Wills demonstrate that while effectiveness of an SCS is dependent more upon internal flow velocities and flow distances, the need to consider length-width ratios are applicable to construction sites. Additionally, Fifield and Wills present an assessment of “Flow-Through Systems” to capture polymer treated sediments demonstrating how a small SCS can have a high rate of effectiveness during flood flow events.
