Oregon takes extra erosion control measures for rainy season

Dec. 16, 2024
The state of Oregon announced in September 2024 that it will take extra erosion control measures from October through April 2025.

The city of Portland, Oregon, announced in September 2024 that the city will take extra measures to combat erosion from October 1, 2024, through April 30, 2025.

According to the city, an on-site erosion and sediment control manager must conduct and document inspections at least weekly. Inspections must occur within 24 hours of rain events exceeding one-half inch of rain measured within a 24-hour period by the nearest active rain gauge.

The city also announced that from October through April, all denuded sites must be provided with temporary or permanent soil stabilization as soon as possible and no more than two days after ground-disturbing activity occurs.

The city stated that sports fields or playground surrounded by vegetative cover or permanently installed curbing are exempt from this requirement.

Ground disturbing activity will be prohibited between October 1, 2024, and April 30, 2025, in environmental zones within the Balch Creek and Forest Park subdistricts of the Northwest Hills plan district.

According to a Portland press release, erosion control is important for maintaining water quality and nutrients in soil. It is important for protecting nearby streams and the fish and wildlife that inhabit them.
