The University of Hawaii in Honolulu's Andrews Amphitheater called for a project to reinforce its high-traffic grass area. The grass was damaged and rutted in areas where event traffic was heaviest, especially from wet conditions. The University of Hawaii Maintenance Department wanted a solution that maintained a consistently beautiful green appearance of the area.

The department selected Terratame2 ground reinforcement mesh, a product manufactured by Invisible Structures and sold through Exacta Sales. It is a thick plastic mesh supplied in a roll that is installed directly onto existing grass or soil. The ground reinforcement mesh is designed to protect, reinforce and stabilize the ground against damage caused by traffic—pedestrian and vehicular—water and erosion. It also creates traction for a more usable surface. It is easy and inexpensive to install. It is held down with Landscape U-pins and remains stable under traffic but can easily be removed. The product also is 100% recyclable.

Once 40 sq meters of the material was installed at the amphitheater, pedestrians; golf carts; and utility carts for catering, bands, and equipment were able to traverse the Terratame2. This helped prevent the rut- ting of the grass even in the event of rain. The grass grew through the mat, making the surface nearly invisible two weeks after installation. The ground reinforcement mesh became completely camouflaged in approximately another two weeks—four weeks after installation.

The functionality of the high traffic area improved while maintaining the appearance of lush well-kept grass.
