Introduction to Permeable Pavement 1
May 21, 2015; 11:00 am – 12:30 pm
Stormwater management is a key component of urban infrastructure design. If properly designed and constructed, porous pavements can help rainwater infiltrate soil, decrease urban heating, replenish groundwater, and reduce overall stormwater runoff. Today, the construction of permeable pavement systems that can accommodate surface water runoff is gaining increased attention through the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program.
Join David Hein, P.Eng., vice president of transportation and principal engineer at Applied Research Associates and chair of the ASCE T&DI Permeable Pavement Structural Design Committee for the first session in our 4-session Permeable Pavement Master Class Series exploring permeable asphalt, concrete, interlocking concrete, and grid pavement key features and structural design comparisons, as well as design, construction, and maintenance best practices, tools, and methodologies for municipal and parking area hydrological and structural design.

Within this discussion, we’ll introduce an evaluation matrix to assist potential owners, users, and specifiers to determine the applicability of permeable pavement systems for specific applications. We’ll also discuss and rate the key features to provide an overall composite rating and recommendation for the “go” / “no go” for permeable pavement installation. And finally, we’ll discuss best management practices, features, and elements for the successful design and construction of your permeable pavement project.
This Introduction to Permeable Pavements session is the first module in our 4-session Permeable Pavement Master Class Series.
